Research Agreements:
A large proportion (approximately 48%) of research funding that is brought
into the Faculty of Education is from other external sources (Source:
Faculty of Education External Review, 2005). These funds are from provincial
ministries, federal government programs, foundations, associations, societies
and the private sector. Application for these funds take the form of unrestricted
grants-in-aid to support general research activities defined by individual
researcher or team of researchers; research agreements in which the research
to be done is defined jointly by the sponsor and the researcher; and research
contracts are similar to research agreements in that the research is to
be done is determined jointly by the sponsor and the researcher.
Grants-In-Aid:
Grants-in-aid are typically provided by philanthropic sources with no
strings attached.
Contracts:
Contracts differ from grants-in-aid and agreements in that publication
and other means of communication of research results may be temporarily
restricted (within clearly defined limits) to protect commercial interests.
In addition, in the case of agreements and contracts, standard University
overheads may be charged and they are eligible costs defined by the sponsor.
University overhead charges do not apply to grants-in-aid. For some sponsors,
UBC's University-Industry Liaison Office
(UILO) has a Standard
Overhead Policy. If you have questions about overhead, please contact
UILO directly.
A Special Note about Foundations:
The Faculty has established relationships, protocols and funding priorities
with various private organizations and foundations. If you intend to apply
for funding from private co-operations and foundations, please be sure
to first contact Stephanie Forgacs,
Director of Development, Faculty of Education, at 604-822-0566 to discuss
your plans.
