UBC Research Signature Policy: Applications for Research Funding

Please note that all applications for external research funding require principle applicants to adhere to UBC's research signature policy http://www.ors.ubc.ca/policies/sigpolicy1.htm

This policy requires applicants to provide UBC with the signatures of the following individuals before the application is sent to the sponsor:
1) The Applicant
2) The Department Head (in the case of Human Kinetics faculty, the signature of School Director, Bob Sparks)
3) The Associate Dean of Graduate Programs & Research. HKIN faculty do not require this signature, only that of the School Director.
4) The Director of the Office of Research Services.

For application forms that do not accommodate the signatures listed above, or those for which additional signatures are awkward or not possible, UBC's Office of Research Services has created a Signature Template, available on the ORS web site: http://www.ors.ubc.ca/eforms/ubcforms.htm

Value & Duration : Proposal development stage - $20K for 8 months; Full award - $2.5Million over 7 years
Goals: The Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRI) program supports leading edge research with true potential for intellectual breakthrough that addresses broad and critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance through the effective coordination and integration of diverse research activities and research results. The conceptual framework and research questions of MCRI projects should be of such breadth and scope as to require the participation of many scholars of different perspectives and with different types of expertise working together in an enriching and effective fashion.
The specific objectives of the MCRI program are to:

  • promote broadly based collaborative research as the central mode of research activity—both within and among disciplines, departments, and faculties as well as with other sciences at universities across the country and abroad;
  • promote the development of active partnerships with private or public sector groups to ensure their participation in the design and conduct of the research project and in the dissemination of research results;
  • promote the development of links with appropriate stakeholders;
  • provide unique opportunities for training students and postdoctoral fellows in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment;
  • support research that achieves integrated and comprehensive syntheses of the issues under study;
  • encourage dynamic and innovative approaches to disseminating research findings that will have a major impact on Canadian scholarship and society by reaching both traditional and new audiences, including Canadian and international scholars, policy makers, stakeholders and the general public; and
  • involve postsecondary institutions in long-term commitments to the development of unique, large-scale inter-postsecondary institution research initiatives.

Application Procedures : Applicants must complete and submit a SSHRC web-based application form that includes an estimate of the project budget, a list of funds from other sources, attachments outlining the description of the proposal and a description of stakeholders, and SSHRC CVs for applicants, co-applicants and collaborators.
