2009 Faculty of Education HSS Travel Grant

Funding for the Faculty of Education HSS Conference Travel Grant is made available through the annual SSHRC Institutional Grant, and is specifically designed to fund costs for travel to international conferences for researchers working in the Humanities and Social Sciences. For this funding program, international conferences are defined as those that either take place outside of North America or are major conferences in North America that bring together outstanding scholars from around the world. More specifically, this grant is designed to fund travel where:

(1) faculty have been accepted to present at an international conference between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010;

(2) travel to the conference is directly related to the applicant’s research; and

(3) attendance at the conference does more than afford the opportunity to present research findings, but also in some specific way enhances the applicant’s research or career (e.g., by enabling face-to-face meetings with research collaborators).

Priority will be given to more junior scholars who have yet to receive substantial external funding and for whom travel will advance their careers (e.g., by interacting in particular ways with scholars of prominent international standing; by actively building a research network tied to their research). But this grant is also designed for more senior faculty who meet the program criteria and who, during the period addressed by this project (April 1, 2009 - March 31, 2010), do not or will not have access to Tri-Council or other external funding that allows for support of conference travel.

While we are very supportive of faculty members participating in international meetings, we are also conscious of the environmental footprint associated with international travel. In light of this, we are asking applicants to make a specific case for why travel for face-to-face meetings is critical to advancing their research or their career.
