The following list of merit-based awards and grants include funding opportunities administered by the Office of Graduate Programs & Research (OGPR), Faculty of Education.

GRADUATE STUDENT FUNDING OPPORTUNITY:

2009-2010 WENDY K. SUTTON GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY (#1998)
 
Scholarships totaling $1,500 have been endowed by Dr. Wendy K. Sutton, a specialist in children抯 literature and a dedicated educator, for Education graduate students whose scholarly work advances the understanding and practice of early childhood literacy, with priority given to those focusing on the preschool years.  The awards are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.  For Application Information and Terms of Reference, please check back. We are pleased to announce the 2009 Verna J. Kirkness (Ni-jing-jada) Award. Awards totaling $1,300 have been endowed by friends, colleagues and the University of British Columbia in honour of Dr. Verna J. Kirkness (Ni-jing-jada), the founding director of the First Nations House of Learning and the Ts”Kel Graduate Studies Program.

We are also pleased to announce the Harry E. Taylor Canadian Indigenous Graduate Prize in Education. A $500 prize has been endowed through the bequest from Stanley Taylor to honour his father, Harry E. Taylor, for Canadian Indigenous students in a graduate program who are specializing in research that will have a positive impact on improving Canadian Indigenous education. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education in consultation with the Associate Dean for Indigenous Education and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Margaret and Peter Lukasevich Memorial Graduate Prize in Early Childhood Education

A prize has been endowed in memory of Margaret and Peter Lukasevich by their daughters, Dr. Ann Lukasevich and Mrs. Margaret Tousignant. It is awarded to a graduate student whose scholarly work informs practice in early childhood education. Preference is given to students who have experience working with or teaching young children between the ages of three and eight. The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. For Application Information and Terms of Reference, please check back. This award is not available for the 2009-2010 year.

Ted T. Aoki Prize for Outstanding Dissertation in Curriculum Studies

All Faculty of Education PhD supervisors are invited to nominate one of their Winter 2009 PhD graduates whose work resides in the field of curriculum for the Ted T. Aoki Prize. A prize worth approximately $275 has been endowed in honour of the contributions of Professor Ted T. Aoki to recognize an excellent dissertation in the area of curriculum inquiry written by a doctoral student in the Faculty of Education.

Eligibility note: Graduates must have been registered in Winter 2009 to be eligible (Terms 1 or 2). The award is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Supervisors interested in nominating a PhD graduate should send the following documentation to the OGPR by the submission deadline to be announced soon.

  • An excerpt from and/or description of the thesis research, in simple language (not exceeding 20 pages, excluding references)

  • A Table of Contents

  • Nominee cover letter explaining how their dissertation/work fits the Aoki award criteria

  • A letter of support from the nominator.

  • A letter of support from the thesis supervisor

  • Letter of support from the Department Head

  • All university-level transcripts (original or certified true copy of official transcripts)

  • List of publications and/or professional achievements

  • Copy of External Examiner's report

  • Copy of Chair's report

Important note to nominees: Please be prepared to make a presentation of no longer than 20 minutes to the adjudication committee. Within your presentation, you should address how your work fits with the award criteria. Presentations can be done in person to the committee at a to be determined date, or they can be videotaped and presented to the committee in advance of the adjudication (note that a videotape of the presentation at the doctoral examination could be submitted for this purpose). If you would like to submit a videotape or DVD of your presentation, please contact Christine Wallsworth at christine.wallsworth@ubc.ca. Please drop off a copy of your dissertation to the OGPR by (date to be announced) so that it is available to committee members (should they wish to view it).

Faculty of Education Graduate Student Conference Travel Grant

The goal of this initiative, administered by the OGPR, is to reimburse Education graduate students up to $750 for costs incurred in presenting a first-authored paper, poster session, or workshop at a local, national or international conference. This is a reimbursement initiative; meaning successful students must first incur the costs of travel and then submit receipts for reimbursement. Faculty of Education Graduate Student Research Grant

This annual competition, administered by the OGPR, is designed to reimburse Faculty of Education graduate students for the financial costs of conducting or producing their own research projects. Approximately 10 grants of up to $1000 are awarded annually. Please go to the above link for further information.

UBC Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Teaching Award

This annual competition, administered in the Faculty of Education by the OGPR, is designed to recognize the valuable role that teaching assistants play in our programs. The University annually awards teaching prizes to twelve UBC Teaching Assistants. Please see information posted on the above link.

Faculty of Education Summer Competition for UBC Endowed Awards

This annual competition, administered by the OGPR, is for UBC endowed scholarships and prizes that have eligibility criteria accessible to Education graduate students. The competition for the awards is typically in the early summer and awards are to be taken up in September of each year. Further information will be announced here soon.
