1) I am on the part-time fee payment schedule. Am I eligible for awards?

Generally, part-time students at UBC are ineligible for University-level awards, prizes and scholarships. There are a few, very rare exceptions to this rule, whereby individual academic units or Faculties may have initiatives that open to part-time students. Please check you individual academic unit for these opportunities.

2) I am an international graduate student. What awards are available to me?

International graduate students are eligible for all UBC awards and scholarships. International students are not, however, eligible to apply to the annual SSHRC/NSERC/CIHR fellowship competition, nor are they eligible for workstudy programs.

3) Are there employment opportunities for students?

There are work opportunities available for graduate students, both on and off campus. Please see the Office of Graduate Programs & Research's Employment web page for more information.

4) I have received an award from the Faculty of Education. How will I receive the money?

Generally, UBC scholarships are first applies toward a student's tuition the term following the award. The balance of the award, if there is one, is awarded in the form of a cheque, available for pick-up at UBC Financial Services front counter. Scholarships recipients must be registered in a course or a thesis section on the Student Services Centre in the Winter Session they plan to take up their award.

Students who have won a prize do not have to be registered in the Winter Session in which they plan to take up their award in order to receive their award and may pick up their cheques at UBC Financial Services front counter.

Students who have won research assistantship-type awards or external fellowships (like SSHRC) are typically paid through the UBC payroll system. Recipients of these types of awards will have their cheques available for pick-up at UBC Financial Services front counter, unless other arrangements, like direct bank deposits, have been made. Please visit UBC's Financial Services Payroll Forms web page to access the direct deposit application form.

5) I have been accepted to present a paper at a conference, and I would like to receive funding for the travel. Is there travel funding available to graduate students?

Travel funding for graduate students to present at academic conferences is available through the Faculty's Office of Graduate Programs & Research and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Funding may also be available through your academic unit/department. For more information, please visit the OGPR's graduate travel grants page.
